Pac-12 Announcement
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
From the office of Larry Scott, Pac-12 Commissioner;
In light of recent events, an emergency meeting of the Pac-12 oversight committee was held in Los Angeles late in the evening of December 30, 2017. This included myself (commissioner) and presidents and designated chancellors of their respective Universities. After much discussion, an ad hoc committee was created to pursue badly needed changes in the structure and function of the Pac-
12. A few of the ideas are outlined below.
1. The Pac-12 is petitioning the NCAA for a reclassification of Division status, from its current Division I status, to a more manageable Division II or possibly III. This change would include all 12 participating Universities in the current conference. The Pac-12 has as its core mission the growth and development of our student- athletes, and reducing the possibility of physical and psychological damage is certainly a priority.
2. Possible expansion to 14 or 15. The committee is considering several strong candidates, including two very competitive girl’s flag football teams in the Bay area. Also in consideration was Bellevue (WA) High School, however the committee has learned that they are pursuing Division I status, more commensurate with their level of play as well as coach and player remuneration.
3. Immediate change in our slogan, from “The Conference of Champions” to “The Conference of past Champions”. This is a truer reflection of the Pac-12 in its current state. Also under consideration was “These guys are sort of good”, however our legal department* has informed us that the PGA Tour has this locked up.
4. The Pac-12 Network will drop sports and begin showing reruns of I Love Lucy, The Love Boat and The Three Stooges. Viewers looking for football will be redirected to the Big 10 Network and SEC channel.
